Origins and Abu Dhabi

The Al Nahyan family belongs to the Bani Yas historical context of southeastern Arabia. Its early base in the Liwa oasis preceded its settlement in Abu Dhabi in the late eighteenth century. Pearling, trade, oasis agriculture and regional alliances shaped the setting in which the ruling house developed. The family’s history should be distinguished from the much longer archaeological history of the territory.

From emirate leadership to federation

Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan became Ruler of Abu Dhabi in 1966. He subsequently played a central role in establishing the UAE in 1971 and served as its first president. Abu Dhabi’s oil revenues provided an important economic context, but the federation also depended on agreements among the emirates and the creation of shared institutions. The state was not simply an extension of one family household.

The succession after Zayed

Khalifa bin Zayed succeeded Zayed in 2004 as ruler and became the UAE’s second president. Mohamed bin Zayed became ruler in May 2022 and was elected the federation’s third president by the Federal Supreme Council. The sequence connects dynastic succession in Abu Dhabi with a separate federal process. Both processes matter when explaining why the same person holds an emirate and a national office.

Current ruler, heir and federal offices

Mohamed bin Zayed is the current ruler and president. His son Khaled was appointed Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi in March 2023. His brother Mansour holds federal offices including the vice presidency. Khaled’s position identifies an emirate heir; it does not itself constitute election as a future UAE president. Mansour’s public responsibilities likewise need to be understood through the offices he holds.

The family and public institutions

Abu Dhabi’s Executive Council, federal ministries and investment organizations operate through their respective institutional frameworks. Royal family members may hold leadership positions in them, but family membership and an organization’s assets are not interchangeable categories. This page therefore avoids personal-wealth estimates and links individual biographies for the dates and responsibilities that can be supported by named sources.
