Family and background

Tahnoun, also spelled Tahnoon in official English material, was born in 1968. He is a son of Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and Fatima bint Mubarak and a brother of President Mohamed bin Zayed. The spelling variation refers to the same public figure, not a separate member of the family. His own career is distinguished here from relatives with similar names.

National-security responsibilities

He became the UAE’s national security adviser in 2016. The position concerns federal security policy and high-level coordination. It is different from a foreign minister’s portfolio or an emirate succession title, even where diplomatic meetings overlap. Official records identify the appointment and current title; they do not provide a public operational account of every activity associated with the office.

Deputy Ruler of Abu Dhabi

Tahnoun was appointed a deputy ruler of Abu Dhabi in March 2023. Hazza bin Zayed also holds a deputy-ruler position, while Khaled bin Mohamed is crown prince. The distinction matters because deputy ruler and designated heir are different offices. Tahnoun’s emirate role operates alongside his federal national-security responsibilities rather than replacing them.

Investment and technology institutions

His public profile includes chairing boards associated with investment and technology, including G42 and Abu Dhabi’s Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Technology Council. These organizations have their own mandates and management. Their reported assets or portfolios should not be converted into an estimate of a royal’s personal wealth, and policy aspirations should not be confused with completed technical results.

Security and economic diplomacy

Official engagements connect security relationships with economic and technological cooperation. Such activity reflects a public career across several institutional settings. Evaluating particular partnerships requires their own evidence about terms, governance and implementation. This biography identifies the offices and organizations without assuming that every investment decision or company outcome can be explained by one person alone.

Connections within Al Nahyan

The family page connects Tahnoun to his brothers and to Khaled as a member of the next generation. It does not portray all brothers as joint heirs or give them identical government powers. Separating family ties from public appointments is especially useful when the same surname appears across national security, investment organizations and emirate administration.
