Piacenza and a change of direction

Giorgio Armani was born in Piacenza on 11 July 1934. He studied medicine without completing the course and later entered the fashion world through work at the Milan department store La Rinascente. Display, buying and contact with products supplied practical experience before he became a designer. His career therefore began with observation of retail and materials rather than a conventional fashion-school qualification.

Cerruti and independent work

Work for Nino Cerruti helped develop his understanding of menswear and industrial clothing production. He subsequently worked as a freelance designer, gaining experience across different businesses. Ready-to-wear requires a relationship between an idea, the available fabrics and repeatable manufacture. That knowledge became important when he developed his own approach to the jacket, where apparent ease depended on carefully considered construction.

Founding with Sergio Galeotti

Armani and Sergio Galeotti established Giorgio Armani S.p.A. in Milan in July 1975. Galeotti supplied an essential business partnership while Armani directed design. The early collections softened traditional tailoring, reducing rigid structures and favouring a more fluid relationship with the body. The result was a new interpretation of familiar garments, not the disappearance of tailoring or the invention of informal clothing from nothing.

Cinema and an international audience

The wardrobe for American Gigolo in 1980 brought Armani’s clothing before a broad international audience. Richard Gere’s appearance made the relationship between fabric, movement and personal presentation especially visible. The connection with cinema continued as a significant part of the brand’s public identity. A film can amplify a design language, but the resulting demand still depends on production, distribution and clothes that function beyond the screen.

Different lines and a wider business

Emporio Armani and Armani Jeans launched in 1981, creating channels distinct from the principal line. Later development included fragrance, accessories, interiors and hospitality, while Armani Privé introduced a couture presentation in 2005. These activities share a name but have different production methods and commercial arrangements. A biography should distinguish the designer’s direction from specialist work carried out by manufacturers, perfumers and other partners.

A completed founder career

Armani died on 4 September 2025, as recorded in the company’s official history. His own career is therefore historical even though the group continues. The legacy includes a restrained visual language, an influential approach to the suit and a business built across several product settings. Later ownership and creative decisions require separate verification rather than assuming that the company’s present direction still comes from its founder.
