London and apprenticeship

Lee Alexander McQueen was born in London in 1969. He left school at sixteen and trained in Savile Row tailoring before working in theatrical costume and with other designers. These experiences gave him an understanding of cut, fit and the manipulation of fabric. The later dramatic appearance of his collections rested on this practical foundation rather than replacing the need for technical construction.

Central Saint Martins and the label

He completed a fashion master’s degree at Central Saint Martins, and his 1992 graduate collection attracted the support of stylist Isabella Blow. He then developed his own label. The early shows established an uncompromising public identity, but their production depended on a network of collaborators. Recognition involved supporters and institutions as well as the designer’s ability to produce distinctive clothes.

History and the body

McQueen’s collections drew on Victorian culture, Scottish history, natural forms and other sources. The results could be beautiful and deliberately unsettling at the same time. Low-cut trousers, altered proportions and elaborate surfaces challenged conventional ideas of glamour. Provocative titles and images require contextual reading; they should not be mistaken for simple descriptions of what every garment or every wearer was intended to represent.

Givenchy and commercial expansion

He served as chief designer at Givenchy from 1996 to 2001 while continuing his own work. In 2000 the Gucci Group acquired a majority stake in his company. Those arrangements mark different professional relationships: leading an established house, maintaining an independent creative identity and working within a larger corporate structure. His company’s growth involved production and management decisions beyond the spectacle of the runway.

The runway as a medium

Shows such as No. 13, VOSS and Plato’s Atlantis turned presentation into an integral part of the work. Robotics, enclosed sets, projected imagery and digital distribution altered the audience’s experience. Collaborators in jewellery, millinery, film and stage production helped realize these events. A photographed runway moment is therefore the visible result of a collective production process, not a complete account of the design on its own.

Final work and museum reception

McQueen died in February 2010. Sarah Burton and the team completed the final collection, and later exhibitions brought the work into museum settings. Savage Beauty opened at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2011 and at the V&A in 2015. His historical significance includes an unusual integration of tailoring, narrative and performance, while the completed career remains distinct from the continuing fashion house that uses his name.
