Family and childhood

Vajiralongkorn was born in Bangkok on 28 July 1952, the only son of Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit. He grew up during his father’s long reign and attended Chitralada School before continuing his education abroad. His designation as Rama X places him within the Chakri dynastic sequence rather than identifying a separate family surname.

Education and military preparation

His schooling included institutions in Britain before military education in Australia. He completed training at the Royal Military College, Duntroon in 1976 and pursued aviation qualifications. These experiences preceded accession by decades. Military education, service appointments and the constitutional position of sovereign are separate stages, even when royal biographies present them within a single public-service narrative.

Crown prince from 1972

He was invested as crown prince in December 1972. The position identified the heir during Bhumibol’s reign and involved official representation as well as military responsibilities. It did not make him a joint sovereign. The lengthy preparation period helps explain why many photographs and reports describe him by a prince’s title before the transition of 2016.

The succession of 2016

Bhumibol died on 13 October 2016. Vajiralongkorn accepted the formal invitation to become king on 1 December, with the reign officially dated from 13 October. The distinction between the effective reign date and the later acceptance is important. A simple timeline that uses only December would omit the date recognized in Thailand’s official royal chronology.

Coronation and marriage

He married Suthida on 1 May 2019, and the coronation followed on 4 May. The ceremony marked a reign that had already begun more than two years earlier. Suthida’s consort title and the king’s sovereign position are distinct. Her separate biography covers the earlier aviation and military career that preceded their marriage.

The contemporary monarchy

The king’s duties operate within Thailand’s constitutional order and its particular royal traditions. National ceremonies, military associations and royal initiatives form different parts of the public record. This biography establishes the educational and accession chronology without attributing every state programme to one person or relying on estimates of private wealth. The sources distinguish current titles from the earlier crown-prince period.
