Family and education

Al Mayassa was born in 1983, a daughter of Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and Moza bint Nasser. She is a sister of Amir Tamim and Hind bint Hamad. She studied political science and literature at Duke University. The family relationships explain her place in the royal directory, while her institutional career gives the profile its distinct cultural focus.

Qatar Museums

She has chaired Qatar Museums since its establishment in 2005. The organization encompasses museums, exhibitions, heritage sites and public art. Its development involves curators, conservators, architects and administrative teams. A chairperson’s leadership is part of that institutional history, but it should not erase the specialist work needed to build collections, conduct research and operate museums.

Museum development and collections

Her chairmanship spans the opening of the Museum of Islamic Art in 2008 and the National Museum of Qatar in 2019. Those institutions have different collections and interpretive purposes. The dates provide concrete milestones in a cultural programme without relying on speculative acquisition budgets or treating the price of a reported purchase as a measure of the quality of a museum.

Film and creative industries

Al Mayassa founded the Doha Film Institute in 2010. Its work supports filmmaking through education, funding and professional development. Her other activities include Fashion Trust Arabia, associated with emerging designers in the region. These are different institutions with their own programmes, and the biography keeps film, fashion and museum leadership identifiable rather than merging them into one generic patronage.

Cultural exchange

The Years of Culture programme connects Qatar with partner countries through cultural exchange. It illustrates a form of public work that intersects with diplomacy while remaining distinct from the foreign ministry. Exhibitions, educational partnerships and artist exchanges can provide sustained relationships, but their effects require evidence beyond the visibility of an opening event or a public announcement.

Connections within the family

The Al Thani page links Al Mayassa to Moza, Tamim and Hind. Moza’s work centers on educational and social institutions, Hind’s on Qatar Foundation and Tamim’s on the amirship. Their relationship is shared, but their public responsibilities differ. The selected family diagram makes those connections visible without suggesting that the museums chairperson holds the sovereign’s state office.
