Family and early lifeEducation and diplomatic serviceCulture, sports and youthThe crown-prince positionEconomic responsibilities in 2026Understanding the two positionsFamily and early life
Theyazin was born in Muscat on 21 August 1990, the eldest son of Haitham bin Tariq and Ahad bint Abdullah. His father became sultan in January 2020. Family background and public office are related here, but the later establishment of the crown-prince position is a separate institutional milestone. He was not formally crown prince throughout his childhood.
Education and diplomatic service
His education included Oxford Brookes University and later military training at Sandhurst. Before ministerial office, he worked in Oman’s foreign-affairs administration, including a diplomatic posting in London. These stages should be distinguished from one another: university study, embassy service and military training do not constitute one continuous ministerial appointment or the same qualification.
Culture, sports and youth
He became minister of culture, sports and youth in August 2020. The portfolio brought together cultural institutions and activities associated with young people and sport. It belonged to the period before his 2026 economic appointment. Historical biographies may still emphasize the earlier ministry, so the chronology separates the former portfolio from his current public office.
The crown-prince position
Changes to Oman’s Basic Statute in 2021 established a clearer succession framework and the crown-prince role. Theyazin became the designated heir under that arrangement. The development concerns the structure of succession as well as one individual’s title. It does not mean he became co-sultan or replaced Haitham as the reigning sovereign.
Economic responsibilities in 2026
The reconstituted Council of Ministers in January 2026 appointed him deputy prime minister for economic affairs. Oman’s Foreign Ministry currently lists that role. Economic coordination differs from his former culture-and-youth portfolio, and the appointment does not by itself demonstrate particular economic outcomes. Programmes and institutional reforms require separate examination through their decisions and implementation.
Understanding the two positions
The crown-prince title concerns succession, while the deputy premiership concerns current government work. Both are listed in the facts panel because neither alone explains his public position. The linked Haitham biography provides the sovereign context, allowing readers to follow father-and-son relationships while retaining the distinction between the present sultan, a designated heir and ministerial responsibilities.
