Sabah Al-Khalid was born in Kuwait in 1953, a son of Khalid bin Hamad Al-Sabah and Mouza bint Ahmad Al-Sabah. He graduated in political science from Kuwait University in 1977. Through his mother he is a nephew of Amir Mishal. The connection is important because Kuwait’s current heir is not simply the reigning amir’s son.
Diplomatic service
He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1978 and served in its Arab Affairs Department and Kuwait’s permanent mission to the United Nations. From 1995 to 1998 he was ambassador to Saudi Arabia and representative to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. These roles provide a substantial diplomatic background before his later cabinet and succession appointments.
Security and ministerial portfolios
He became head of the National Security Bureau in 1998. Subsequent appointments included social affairs and labor, information and foreign affairs. The sequence illustrates a career across different public institutions rather than one uninterrupted portfolio. The foreign-minister period began in 2011 and included deputy-premier responsibilities, bringing him into senior national leadership before the premiership.
Prime minister from 2019
Sabah Al-Khalid became prime minister in November 2019 and headed successive governments before the end of that period in 2022. The office was separate from the amirship and from his later position as crown prince. His biography therefore records a former head-of-government role without implying that he remains prime minister in the current Kuwaiti administration.
Crown-prince appointment
He became crown prince in June 2024 under Amir Mishal. Official accounts record the designation and the oath within that month’s transition. The title concerns succession, while representative visits and delegated duties form part of the public programme. His earlier cabinet experience helps explain his administrative background, but it does not mean that the crown-prince appointment was itself an accession as amir.
Position within Al Sabah
The Al Sabah page connects his biography with Mishal’s and labels their nephew-and-uncle relationship. This is a selected view of a much wider family with multiple branches and a long history in Kuwait. Keeping personal relationships separate from public offices allows readers to understand both the dynastic connection and the professional career that preceded the current succession role.
