Family and early life

Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby was born in Kristiansand on 19 August 1973 and grew up in Vågsbygd as the youngest of four siblings. Her early life and education preceded her relationship with Haakon. She has an older son, Marius Borg Høiby, from before the royal marriage, a distinction that helps readers understand the family relationships accurately.

Education and preparation

Her education included study in Norway and a period abroad, followed later by a Master of Management degree from BI Norwegian Business School. The later qualification belongs to the crown-princess years rather than to childhood. Distinguishing the stages prevents an account of royal life from flattening all education into an undated list of institutions.

Marriage in 2001

She married Crown Prince Haakon at Oslo Cathedral on 25 August 2001 and became crown princess. Their children are Ingrid Alexandra and Sverre Magnus. Haakon’s marriage did not change Harald V’s position as sovereign. The crown-princess title marked her relationship to the heir while the public duties developed through engagements and organizational associations over subsequent years.

Advocacy and public engagements

Her public record has included youth inclusion, literature and international HIV-related advocacy. These themes belong to different institutional settings and should not be treated as one government portfolio. A royal advocate may bring attention to a subject, while agencies and professional organizations perform the operational work. Specific impact claims require evidence beyond a public appearance.

Literature and social participation

Literary events and activities encouraging reading have been a recurring part of her programme. The crown-prince couple’s foundation has also supported inclusion among young people. These strands provide a public-work chronology alongside formal ceremonies. The profile concentrates on documented activity rather than inferring a new executive responsibility from every organization with which she has been associated.

Queen consort from 2026

She became Queen of Norway when Haakon VIII succeeded Harald V on 28 August 2026. Ingrid Alexandra then became crown princess. The official royal-house biography confirms these changes, so older descriptions of Mette-Marit as only crown princess are placed in their historical context. The current consort title remains distinct from the sovereign office held by Haakon.
