Family and upbringing

Haakon was born in Oslo on 20 July 1973, the son of Harald and Sonja. He grew up at Skaugum with his elder sister Märtha Louise. His early life preceded his father’s reign. Under the succession arrangements applying to his generation, he became heir when Harald acceded in 1991, despite having an older sister.

Education and naval preparation

His preparation included naval education and service, followed by international study. He earned a political-science degree at the University of California, Berkeley and a master’s degree at the London School of Economics. The academic and military periods were distinct stages before accession, providing a more concrete account of his preparation than a list of royal titles alone.

Crown prince from 1991

After Olav V’s death in January 1991, Haakon became crown prince. He began attending the Council of State on reaching adulthood later that year. During Harald’s reign he undertook representative visits and sometimes served as regent when the king could not perform duties. Those temporary periods did not themselves mark the beginning of a new reign.

Marriage and public engagement

He married Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby in Oslo in August 2001. Their children are Ingrid Alexandra and Sverre Magnus; Mette-Marit also has an older son, Marius. Haakon’s public programme has included youth inclusion, sustainability and international development. His UNDP goodwill-ambassador appointment in 2003 belongs to that broader record of advocacy as heir.

Accession in August 2026

Haakon succeeded as King Haakon VIII on 28 August 2026 following Harald V’s death. Official records identify Ingrid Alexandra as crown princess after the transition. Earlier biographies describing him only as crown prince are therefore historical descriptions. This profile retains the earlier title in its chronological context while using the current sovereign title in the facts panel.

A constitutional sovereign

His duties as king remain within Norway’s constitutional framework, with elected government responsible for political administration. The transition changes the office-holder rather than converting representative monarchy into personal executive government. The linked Harald biography explains the preceding reign, allowing readers to trace the father-and-son relationship and the institutional transfer without confusing family chronology with a continuing temporary regency.
