Birth and family

Ingrid Alexandra was born in Oslo on 21 January 2004, the daughter of Haakon and Mette-Marit. She grew up at Skaugum during Harald V’s reign. Her younger brother is Sverre Magnus. Norway’s succession rules place her before him as the elder child, so her heir status does not depend on the absence of a younger brother.

Schooling and coming of age

She attended schools in the Oslo area, including Oslo International School and Elvebakken upper-secondary school, completing secondary education in June 2023. On reaching eighteen in January 2022 she received her own office at the Royal Palace. That milestone increased her public preparation but did not itself make her crown princess while her father remained heir.

Military service

In 2024–2025 she completed fifteen months of initial military service with the Engineer Battalion in Brigade Nord. The period is recorded as service in a named unit rather than an honorary association inferred from uniform. It is also a completed stage distinct from the university education that followed and from the future constitutional role of a sovereign.

University study

She began a social-sciences bachelor’s programme at the University of Sydney in August 2025, with subjects including international relations and political economy. The official biography records an exchange at the University of Oslo in autumn 2026. Enrollment and exchange study should not be described as completed degrees, and the educational commitments remain central to her current preparation.

Crown princess in 2026

After Harald V’s death on 28 August 2026, her father became Haakon VIII and she became crown princess. The title identifies the heir, while the king remains sovereign. The transition is stated separately from her earlier adulthood and military-service milestones, preventing the common mistake of treating every stage of preparation as an accession event.

Duties alongside education

The royal-house record explains that she may take part in the Council of State and act as regent under the relevant constitutional arrangements. Such temporary duties differ from holding the crown permanently. Linking her profile with Haakon and Mette-Marit allows readers to follow the family transition while keeping the sovereign, consort and heir roles distinct.
