Family and childhood

Mathilde d’Udekem d’Acoz was born in Uccle on 20 January 1973 and grew up near Bastogne. She completed secondary education in Brussels before professional study. Her Belgian upbringing is part of the biography before royal marriage, while her birth-family name remains distinct from the royal-family membership acquired when she married Philippe.

Speech therapy and psychology

She studied speech therapy at the Haute École Léonard de Vinci and worked as a speech therapist from 1995 to 1999. She later earned a master’s in psychology at the Université catholique de Louvain in 2002. Professional practice and a later academic qualification are separate milestones and should not be merged into an unverified clinical role continuing throughout royal life.

Marriage and family

Mathilde married Philippe on 4 December 1999 and became Duchess of Brabant and Princess of Belgium. Their children are Elisabeth, Gabriel, Emmanuel and Eléonore. Elisabeth is heir to the throne. The family relationships make clear that the queen consort’s public position differs from both the king’s constitutional office and the next generation’s succession role.

Queen consort from 2013

When Albert II abdicated and Philippe took the oath on 21 July 2013, Mathilde became Queen of the Belgians. Her duties include state visits, ceremonies and meetings with institutions and communities. These representative responsibilities support the sovereign but do not make her a queen regnant or a replacement for elected ministers and representative bodies.

Social and educational work

Her programme includes children’s welfare, education, mental health, women’s economic participation and financial literacy. These subjects connect with her earlier training but are exercised through advocacy and institutional relationships. The profile avoids presenting a royal speech as a measured social outcome or assuming that every supported organization is directly operated by the queen.

Culture and international representation

Mathilde has held the high patronage of the Queen Elisabeth Competition since 2014, supporting a major musical institution. Her official biography also records an expanded role leading Belgian economic missions from 2026 on behalf of the king. This newer responsibility is stated as representative work rather than confused with her earlier professional employment or the sovereign office itself.
