Family and schooling

Camilla Rosemary Shand was born in London on 17 July 1947 to Bruce and Rosalind Shand. She grew up mainly in East Sussex and was educated in England, Switzerland and France. Her birth family is retained in this biography because membership of the royal family by marriage should not be confused with descent from the House of Windsor.

Earlier family life

She married Andrew Parker Bowles in 1973, and they had two children, Tom and Laura. The marriage ended in divorce in 1995. Her relationship with Charles attracted extensive public attention over many years. This period belongs to the biography, but it is not used as a substitute for documenting the later public responsibilities and institutional work associated with her royal role.

Marriage to Charles and the duchess period

Camilla married Charles in a civil ceremony at Windsor on 9 April 2005, followed by a service at St George’s Chapel. She was subsequently known publicly as Duchess of Cornwall. Her programme developed through charitable patronages and engagements in support of the then Prince of Wales, while Elizabeth II remained the reigning sovereign.

Charitable themes

Her work has included literacy, the arts, animal welfare, osteoporosis awareness and support for survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Family experiences of osteoporosis preceded a longstanding association with the relevant charity. These are areas of advocacy and patronage, not claims that a royal has a clinical role or personally delivers all services provided by the supported organizations.

Queen consort and coronation

Following Charles’s accession on 8 September 2022, Camilla became queen consort. She was crowned alongside him on 6 May 2023. The shorter public title Queen does not make her a queen regnant exercising the sovereign office in her own right. The distinction is important when comparing consorts with reigning monarchs elsewhere in the royal directory.

Place in the Windsor family

The Windsor page shows her relationship to Charles separately from the parent-and-child link between Charles and William. This avoids implying that she is William’s mother. Her public biography connects earlier family life, the Duchess of Cornwall period and the present consort role, with official sources establishing the dates and institutions rather than relying only on ceremonial photographs.
