Family and education

Catherine Elizabeth Middleton was born in Reading in 1982 and grew up in Berkshire. Her schooling included Marlborough College before she studied art history at the University of St Andrews. She met William while at university and graduated in 2005. This educational background forms an individual biography before her later titles and public responsibilities within the royal family.

Work and the marriage of 2011

She undertook work and charitable activities before her engagement to William was announced in 2010. They married at Westminster Abbey on 29 April 2011 and became Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Her membership of the royal family is through marriage. The Windsor label therefore describes the family connection rather than erasing the Middleton background recorded in her early life.

Family and changing titles

Catherine and William have three children: George, Charlotte and Louis. In September 2022, after Charles became king, William was named Prince of Wales and Catherine became Princess of Wales. The later title belongs to a new stage in their public roles. It does not mean William has already become king or Catherine has become the reigning queen.

Early childhood work

A central theme of Catherine’s public programme is the significance of early childhood experiences. The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood was launched in 2021, followed by public initiatives encouraging attention to the early years. These are institutional and advocacy activities. Their long-term impact should be evaluated through programme evidence rather than assumed simply from the visibility of a royal launch.

Other public responsibilities

Her work also includes mental-health initiatives, patronages and duties supporting the sovereign in Britain and overseas. Ceremonial appearances and charitable engagements are different kinds of public activity, even where both appear in the official programme. This profile concentrates on documented roles and completed milestones, without presenting personal medical circumstances as a source of speculation about future duties.

Connections within Windsor

The family page links Catherine to William as his spouse and to Charles as her father-in-law. Her own entry explains the education and public-interest work behind the title. Keeping these relationships clear makes the directory easier to navigate while preserving the distinction between a sovereign, the heir and the heir’s spouse, whose responsibilities and constitutional positions are not interchangeable.
