Developing a musical identity

Shakira Mebarak began recording as a teenager in Colombia. Her early releases preceded the stronger international reception of Pies Descalzos in 1995. That album, followed by Dónde Están los Ladrones?, established a distinctive singer-songwriter identity within Spanish-language popular music. Her voice, phrasing and approach to performance became recognizable before the English-language crossover.

Crossing languages

Laundry Service, released in 2001, introduced a substantial English-language audience to her work. Songs such as Whenever, Wherever and Underneath Your Clothes connected that new phase with an already established musical personality. The transition was not simply a translation of an existing catalogue: it required writing and performing within another language while maintaining the qualities listeners associated with her earlier recordings.

An international discography

Fijación Oral, Vol. 1 and Oral Fixation, Vol. 2 reflected her continuing work across languages. Subsequent albums include She Wolf, Sale el Sol and El Dorado. Her songs move through pop, rock and multiple dance traditions, with collaborations contributing to that range. Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran, released in 2024, added a later chapter to a catalogue spanning several decades.

Performance beyond the album

Shakira’s appearances around the football World Cup, including Waka Waka, connected recorded music with international sporting events. She also worked on television as a coach on The Voice and provided the voice of Gazelle in Zootopia. Dance is not merely decorative within her performances: movement is part of the way musical influences are communicated to a live or visual audience.

Education and public activity

Her public work includes the Pies Descalzos Foundation and advocacy for children’s education. This activity sits alongside, rather than replaces, her recording and performing career. Grammy and Latin Grammy recognition provide documented markers of professional reception. Her wider importance can also be understood through the movement of Spanish-language music across national audiences, an area in which she has maintained a visible role.
