Family and early life

Madeleine was born at Drottningholm Palace on 10 June 1982, the third child of the king and queen. Her siblings are Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Carl Philip. Her ducal titles refer to Hälsingland and Gästrikland. They express a royal association with those regions rather than a separate sovereign jurisdiction within Sweden.

School and university

She completed secondary school in Stockholm in 2001 and continued with language and university study. At Stockholm University she studied subjects including art history, ethnology and history, completing a bachelor’s degree in 2006. These academic milestones precede later foundation responsibilities and should not be replaced by a biography concerned only with marriage and family.

UNICEF experience

After university she undertook an internship with UNICEF in New York in 2006. The experience belongs to an early period of engagement with humanitarian issues. An internship is a specific form of work, not equivalent to leading the entire organization. Keeping that distinction preserves the scale and chronology of the actual role.

World Childhood Foundation

Madeleine developed a sustained association with World Childhood Foundation, established by Queen Silvia. The royal-house biography identifies her as vice honorary chair from December 2021. The honorary position differs from executive management. The foundation’s programmes involve professionals and partner organizations working on children’s safety and protection from exploitation.

Marriage and family

She married Christopher O’Neill in June 2013. Their children are Leonore, Nicolas and Adrienne. O’Neill did not assume the same royal title as his wife. The family history therefore illustrates why marriage, royal-house membership and public duties need to be identified separately rather than inferred automatically from a relationship.

A defined public programme

Her official programme is limited, with engagements determined within the royal household and continuing foundation interests. That is more precise than presenting her as a full-time office-holder responsible for every supported project. The profile connects education, humanitarian experience and family without speculating about private life or treating visibility at an event as proof of executive authority.
