Belgian family and childhood

Stéphanie de Lannoy was born in Ronse, also known as Renaix, on 18 February 1984. She was the youngest of eight children and grew up at Anvaing in Belgium. These names describe the same birthplace in different languages, not two separate birthplaces. Her de Lannoy background is distinguished from membership of Luxembourg’s grand-ducal family by marriage.

Languages and university study

She attended school in Belgium and France, studied Russian language and literature in Moscow and graduated in Germanic philology from the Catholic University of Louvain. Her thesis work included a period at Humboldt University in Berlin. These experiences give substance to her linguistic and cultural interests without treating a visit or study period as an additional completed degree.

Marriage and hereditary-grand-duchess period

Stéphanie married Guillaume in October 2012 and became hereditary grand duchess. Their sons are Charles, born in 2020, and François, born in 2023. During the heir’s period she accompanied representative engagements and economic missions. The title concerned marriage to the heir, not a shared sovereign office or an earlier beginning of Guillaume’s reign.

MUDAM and the arts

She became chair of the MUDAM board in 2016 and subsequently accepted the honorary presidency after that mandate ended. The two roles should not be presented as the same continuing executive appointment. The museum’s professional work belongs to its staff and governance structures, while the royal connection provides one part of its institutional history.

Craftsmanship and public interests

Stéphanie and Guillaume supported an exhibition highlighting Luxembourgish craftsmanship in 2016 and the subsequent De Mains de Maîtres association. Her activities also include meeting artists and attending cultural events. These engagements are linked with specific institutions rather than an undifferentiated claim to support all national culture. Programme results require evidence beyond the visibility of a royal opening.

Grand duchess from 2025

When Henri abdicated on 3 October 2025 and Guillaume became grand duke, Stéphanie became grand duchess consort. The official biography confirms the new title and continuing representative programme. Her position remains distinct from that of the reigning head of state. The profile connects the Belgian upbringing, academic study and artistic interests with the later role rather than beginning the biography only at accession.
