From Budapest to London and New York

George Soros was born in Budapest in 1930 and survived the Nazi occupation of Hungary with his Jewish family. He moved to London in 1947 and studied at the London School of Economics while supporting himself through part-time work. The philosophy of Karl Popper became an important intellectual reference. Soros moved to the United States in 1956 and worked in finance, developing experience in international securities before establishing an independent investment business. His later career connected commercial practice with persistent interest in how knowledge and institutions operate.

Building an international investment business

Soros established Soros Fund Management in 1970. His approach became associated with global macro investing: examining currencies, interest rates, economic policy and market relationships across countries rather than confining decisions to the accounts of one company. Such investing combines interpretation of economic conditions with choices about position size, financing and timing. The business developed through teams and institutional structures, so its history cannot be reduced to a single celebrated trade or a simple formula that other investors can reproduce.

Reflexivity and the limits of prediction

In The Alchemy of Finance, published in 1987, Soros presented his theory of reflexivity alongside an account of investment practice. The central idea is that participants’ beliefs can influence the conditions they are trying to understand. Prices, lending and confidence may therefore affect economic outcomes rather than merely report them. This is a framework for interpreting feedback and instability, not a guarantee of accurate prediction. His writing repeatedly emphasizes fallibility, making uncertainty part of the theory rather than an inconvenience to be excluded.

Philanthropy and institutional development

Soros began philanthropic work in 1979 by supporting scholarships for Black South Africans under apartheid. Activities in Hungary during the 1980s expanded into the international network known as the Open Society Foundations. Support for education, rights, independent media and accountable government became prominent elements of that work. Central European University was another major institutional undertaking. These initiatives translated financial resources into organizations with their own governance, staff and priorities; their development belongs to a different history from the management of an investment portfolio.

A public career across finance and ideas

Soros’s public significance comes from the combination of investing, authorship and politically engaged philanthropy. His arguments about markets and society have attracted support and criticism, and a neutral account distinguishes documented activities from speculation about his influence. The Open Society Foundations identify him as their founder. His professional record illustrates how wealth generated in financial markets can support a lasting institutional presence, while also showing why investment results, economic theories and the merits of individual philanthropic programmes need to be evaluated separately.
