Birth and the Spanish royal family

Felipe was born in Madrid in 1968 to Juan Carlos and Sofía. He became heir as Spain’s monarchy was restored under his father and was known as Prince of Asturias before accession. His family belongs to the House of Bourbon. The biographical setting includes Spain’s transition to its present constitutional system, making the modern office different from earlier periods of dynastic rule.

Schooling, military training and university

He studied in Spain and Canada, then trained with the army, navy and air force. His university education included law at the Autonomous University of Madrid and international relations at Georgetown. These stages were part of preparation for a public role rather than a claim that education alone defines the monarch’s powers. Those powers are attached to an office within a constitutional system.

Work as Prince of Asturias

As heir, Felipe represented Spain at domestic events and international engagements. The position included contact with institutions, cultural organizations and public bodies before he became head of state. His marriage to Letizia Ortiz in 2004 introduced another public member of the royal household. Their daughters, Leonor and Sofía, belong to the next generation, with Leonor holding the Princess of Asturias title.

Accession in 2014

Juan Carlos abdicated in June 2014, and Felipe was proclaimed King on 19 June after taking the constitutional oath before Parliament. This was a succession through abdication, not a coronation following a death. Accurate dates and forms of accession matter because European monarchies do not all use the same ceremony or terminology.

A constitutional rather than executive office

Felipe’s work includes state representation, formal constitutional acts, military relationships and support for cultural and civic organizations. The King is not the elected head of government. Distinguishing the crown from the cabinet prevents a royal biography from attributing every government decision to the monarch. His official biography documents duties in Spain and abroad as well as the education that preceded them.

The current family and public institution

Letizia has her own official programme and a separate profile in this collection. The relationship between them explains the royal-family grouping, while their titles explain different roles. Spain’s monarchy is an institution with a public record and public debate, not simply a family portrait. This biography concentrates on verified background, accession and duties without implying endorsement of the institution or approval by the royal household.
