Puerto Rican beginnings

Bad Bunny was born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio in Bayamón and raised in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. His early musical environment included Caribbean popular music as well as rap and reggaeton. Before becoming widely known, he recorded and shared songs online. That direct route to listeners became an important part of his emergence, allowing a distinctive voice to circulate outside traditional industry introductions.

Online discovery and an expanding audience

Diles brought attention in 2016 and helped establish his professional recording career. Collaborations then introduced him to wider audiences, including I Like It with Cardi B and J Balvin in 2018. His deep vocal delivery and unconventional presentation made him recognizable, but the music’s reach also depended on an expanding international market for Latin trap and reggaeton.

Albums as distinct creative worlds

X 100pre, released in 2018, presented a broader artistic identity than a sequence of guest appearances. YHLQMDLG and El Último Tour del Mundo followed in 2020, exploring different balances of reggaeton, trap and rock-influenced production. The latter became the first entirely Spanish-language album to lead the Billboard 200, an important milestone in a United States chart historically dominated by English-language releases.

Un Verano Sin Ti and Caribbean references

Un Verano Sin Ti, released in 2022, placed Caribbean rhythms and a summer atmosphere within a large, varied album. It moved between dance music, more reflective songs and collaborations with other artists. The project demonstrates how Bad Bunny’s work can address a global streaming audience without treating Puerto Rican language, local musical references or regional identity as obstacles to international recognition.

Beyond a single genre or performance setting

His public career also includes acting and professional-wrestling appearances, but recorded music remains its central foundation. Across releases, he has used changes in style and visual presentation to resist a fixed image of the male Latin recording star. His significance lies partly in that flexibility and partly in the commercial space his success helped create for Spanish-language music on international platforms.
