Education and investing background

Buffett was born in Omaha in 1930 and studied at the University of Nebraska and Columbia. Benjamin Graham’s approach to investment influenced his early professional work. He later managed investment partnerships. This preparation preceded Berkshire control, giving the biography a sequence of education, securities analysis and organizational leadership rather than beginning only with a famous company name.

Taking control of Berkshire

He gained control of Berkshire Hathaway in 1965. The business already existed and had textile operations; Buffett did not found it. His later contribution was to change its capital allocation and portfolio of businesses. Keeping acquisition and founding separate is important in a directory that includes entrepreneurs, investors and executives under the same broad business category.

Insurance and capital allocation

Insurance became central to Berkshire, providing premium income and investable funds associated with future claims. That model creates opportunities but also underwriting and liquidity obligations. The group expanded through both full business ownership and securities investments. These are different exposures, even when both appear in public descriptions of Buffett’s investment record.

Partnership with Charlie Munger

Charlie Munger became a major partner in Berkshire’s development, encouraging attention to business quality as well as purchase price. The group grew across insurance, railroads, utilities, manufacturing and retail. Its operations involve managers and large workforces, so the company’s record should not be reduced to stock selection by a single individual.

The succession of 2026

Greg Abel became CEO at the start of 2026. In September Berkshire announced that Buffett had become chairman emeritus while remaining a director, and Howard Buffett became chairman. The current facts panel follows that later announcement. Earlier material describing Warren Buffett as chairman and CEO belongs to a completed leadership period.

Understanding the record

His public letters explain a long-running approach to ownership, incentives and the deployment of retained earnings. They are valuable primary sources but remain the perspective of the writer. The biography does not convert past performance into a future-return promise, present a portfolio as a recommendation or confuse Berkshire’s corporate assets with personal cash available to its former chief executive.
