A theatrical foundation

Song Kang-ho was born in Gimhae and developed his craft in theatre before becoming established on screen. His path did not follow the familiar route of an internationally marketed young star. Instead, years of ensemble performance and supporting parts helped build a style attentive to speech, hesitation and social behavior, qualities that later became central to his film performances.

Recognition in an expanding film industry

No. 3 brought him wider attention in 1997, while Joint Security Area placed him at the center of a major Korean film in 2000. His work emerged during a period when South Korean cinema was developing a stronger international presence. Song moved easily among comedy, thriller and drama, frequently portraying people whose ordinary manner conceals difficult moral choices.

Working with Bong Joon-ho

Memories of Murder, The Host and Snowpiercer established a sustained collaboration with Bong Joon-ho before Parasite. These films use very different genres, yet each gives Song room to combine humor with frustration and vulnerability. His characters are rarely detached from their surroundings: family, institutions and economic pressures shape the small decisions through which the larger story becomes visible.

Parasite and international recognition

In Parasite, Song played Kim Ki-taek, the father of a family seeking work within a wealthy household. The film won the Palme d’Or in 2019 and the best-picture Academy Award in 2020. Its success widened international recognition of Song’s work, while his performance kept the social satire grounded in a character whose dignity and resentment remain inseparable.

Cannes and an extensive body of work

Song won the Cannes best-actor prize in 2022 for Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Broker. Other significant films include Secret Sunshine, The Attorney, A Taxi Driver and several collaborations with Kim Jee-woon. Taken together, these roles show an actor whose importance rests on the accumulated variety of his work, rather than on a single international breakthrough or a fixed heroic screen persona.
