Family and schooling

Joachim was born in Copenhagen on 7 June 1969, the younger son of Margrethe and Prince Henrik. His elder brother is Frederik X. He attended school in Denmark and spent a period in France. Their shared upbringing does not make the brothers holders of the same office: Frederik is sovereign, while Joachim has distinct professional and representative responsibilities.

Agriculture and business

He worked on a farm in Australia after secondary school and studied agricultural economics in Denmark from 1991 to 1993. He also gained experience with the A.P. Møller–Maersk group in Hong Kong and France. These were substantive employment and educational stages before later defence appointments, not a single undifferentiated royal occupation.

Military career

Joachim began military training in 1987 and progressed through reserve-officer responsibilities. He later undertook advanced defence education. Operational and professional military appointments should be distinguished from honorary royal associations, because a title alone does not describe the work of a serving officer. The official biography supplies a detailed sequence of training and duties.

Defence diplomacy

He became defence attaché at Denmark’s embassy in Paris in 2020 and moved to a military-industry attaché role in Washington in September 2023. The postings have different dates and responsibilities. His current public role should therefore not be described solely by the earlier Paris appointment or treated as an ambassadorial office he does not hold.

Marriage and children

He has two sons, Nikolai and Felix, from his first marriage to Alexandra Manley. He married Marie Cavallier in 2008; their children are Henrik and Athena. The children use count or countess titles following changes effective in 2023. The profile retains the current styles rather than assuming that every birth title continues unchanged.

Position within the monarchy

Joachim remains in the succession and may undertake formally defined duties as regent in appropriate circumstances. A temporary regency is distinct from kingship, and family membership is separate from his embassy employment. His biography demonstrates how a royal career can include professional appointments while the sovereign and heir hold different constitutional roles.
