Michael Phelps was born in Baltimore and developed as a swimmer under coach Bob Bowman. He reached the Olympic stage at Sydney in 2000 while still a teenager, competing in the 200-metre butterfly. His early progression already showed the qualities that later defined his career: technical efficiency, versatility and the capacity to handle a demanding programme of training and competition.
Versatility at world level
Phelps built an international record across butterfly, individual medley and freestyle events. That range gave him more opportunities than a specialist in a single race, but also required careful preparation for different distances and strokes. In medley events he had to manage four techniques within one race, while relays demanded the ability to contribute to a team under tightly scheduled championship conditions.
Athens and the Beijing achievement
At Athens in 2004, Phelps won six gold medals and two bronze medals. Four years later in Beijing, he won eight gold medals, surpassing Mark Spitz’s seven-gold total from Munich in 1972. The Beijing programme included individual and relay races, with some victories decided by extremely small margins. It remains the central competitive achievement around which much of his public reputation is organized.
London, a comeback and Rio
Phelps won another six medals at London in 2012 and initially retired before returning to competition in 2014. At Rio in 2016, he added five gold medals and one silver. His final Olympic medal total reached 28, including 23 golds, across the four Games at which he won medals. He had competed at five Olympics when his earlier Sydney appearance is included.
A life in swimming beyond competition
After Beijing, Phelps established the Michael Phelps Foundation, with programmes connected to swimming instruction and water safety. He has also spoken publicly about mental health. His wider role should not obscure the specific sporting basis of his prominence: an unusual combination of event range, technical preparation and repeated championship performance across more than a decade at the highest international level.
