Teaching design tools

Perkins grew up in Perth and attended the University of Western Australia. While helping students use design software, she encountered the difficulty of learning complex interfaces. The observation concerned a practical workflow: people needed a finished design but first faced substantial technical training. It became a starting point for a simpler online approach rather than a claim that professional design expertise was unnecessary.

Fusion Books

She and Cliff Obrecht founded Fusion Books in 2007 to help schools create yearbooks online. The focused product gave them experience with customers, printing and fulfillment as well as software. It was a narrower business than Canva, allowing them to test collaborative design in a defined market before attempting a platform for many kinds of visual content.

The Canva founding team

Perkins and Obrecht developed the broader concept with Cameron Adams, who joined as co-founder. Their roles combined product vision, operations and design engineering. Canva’s public launch took place in August 2013. The founding and launch chronology is kept separate from earlier prototypes and fundraising, avoiding the assumption that every preparatory company date marks the release of the product.

The platform model

Canva combined templates, visual assets and browser-based editing with collaboration and paid services. A free tier lowered the barrier to trying the product, while paid plans supplied additional functionality and organizational features. Its usefulness depends on a combination of interface design, content availability and workflows that help customers produce finished material rather than merely open another software application.

Expansion into organizations

The company broadened from individual designs into presentations, documents, video and workplace collaboration. More recent AI features form part of that evolving product set. The additions should be understood as products to be evaluated, not proof that every announced tool has solved a customer problem. Organizations also require brand consistency, administration and dependable sharing, beyond the needs of one casual user.

Current leadership and significance

Perkins remains identified as co-founder and CEO in Canva’s current leadership material. Her career illustrates movement from a focused customer problem to a reusable platform, with Obrecht, Adams and a growing team contributing to the business. The profile distinguishes operational leadership and founder identity from private-company valuation headlines or predictions about future listings.
