An upbringing across cultures

Lupita Nyong’o was born in Mexico City to Kenyan parents and grew up primarily in Nairobi. School and theatre introduced her to performance before she pursued film and theatre studies in the United States. She later trained at the Yale School of Drama. Her background connects several languages and cultural settings, rather than a single national entertainment industry.

A major dramatic breakthrough

Nyong’o’s performance as Patsey in Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave brought immediate international recognition. The role required her to portray a person living under extreme coercion without reducing the character to a symbol of suffering. At the 2014 Academy Awards she won supporting actress, a striking beginning to her career in major feature films.

Theatre and large-scale filmmaking

She appeared in the play Eclipsed, which reached Broadway in 2016 and earned her a Tony nomination. In film, Black Panther cast her as Nakia, linking a major comic-book production to a fictional African setting. Motion-capture and voice work as Maz Kanata in Star Wars extended her practice into forms where character must be communicated through altered or animated screen bodies.

Horror and contrasting characters

Jordan Peele’s Us gave Nyong’o a dual role, demanding differences in posture, voice and emotional register between two connected characters. A Quiet Place: Day One later placed her within another kind of suspense narrative. These projects demonstrate the importance of detailed physical and vocal choices in her work, even when the surrounding story relies on spectacle or supernatural ideas.

Writing and storytelling for children

Nyong’o published the picture book Sulwe in 2019, with illustrations by Vashti Harrison. Its story addresses colorism and a child’s relationship with her own appearance. Alongside film and stage work, the book gives her a direct role in shaping a story for younger audiences. Her career therefore includes both interpreting other writers’ characters and developing a narrative of her own.
