The breakthrough years

Julia Roberts gained early attention in Mystic Pizza and Steel Magnolias. Pretty Woman then brought her to a much wider audience and helped establish a career closely associated with the romantic comedy.

Expanding the repertoire

My Best Friend’s Wedding and Notting Hill became prominent examples of that work. Erin Brockovich marked a different kind of leading role: her portrayal of the real-life legal campaigner earned the Academy Award for Best Actress. Later films include Closer, August: Osage County and Wonder.

Across formats

Roberts has also taken leading roles in television, including Homecoming and Gaslit. Her producing work through Red Om adds another dimension to her screen career. The range of projects shows a performer moving between commercially familiar roles and more complicated dramatic material.
