Education and early career

Bezos was born in Albuquerque in 1964 and graduated from Princeton in electrical engineering and computer science in 1986. His early work included financial and technology-related firms, culminating in D. E. Shaw. The background combined technical study with experience of analytical businesses before he left employment to build an internet-based retail company.

Amazon’s beginning

He founded Amazon in 1994, and the online bookstore opened in 1995. Books offered a large catalog suited to a searchable website, while selling online required systems for orders, payments and fulfillment. The early business was therefore more than a website: it depended on connecting a digital interface with physical delivery and customer service.

From retailer to platform

Amazon expanded into additional product categories and created a marketplace for independent sellers. Prime, introduced in 2005, linked recurring membership with delivery and other services. Warehousing and logistics became central capabilities. The development changed the business from a single merchant into a system combining retail operations, external sellers, advertising and customer subscriptions.

Cloud computing

Amazon Web Services launched major infrastructure services in 2006 and became a separate business serving organizations that rented computing resources. Cloud economics differ from retail margins, even though both depend on scale and operational discipline. Bezos’s biography therefore involves more than e-commerce: it includes the allocation of investment into a new infrastructure market inside the same corporate group.

The leadership transition

In July 2021 Andy Jassy became Amazon CEO and Bezos moved to executive chair. Current company records preserve that distinction. Calling Bezos the present CEO would obscure a completed succession and confuse founder identity with daily executive responsibility. His founder status remains historically important even when the management role changes.

Other ventures and the public record

Bezos founded Blue Origin in 2000 and later established philanthropic organizations including the Earth Fund and Day One Fund. Aerospace development has different engineering, regulatory and capital requirements from retail or cloud services. The profile records the organizations and roles without treating every announced project as completed or suggesting that a biography constitutes an investment recommendation.
