Independent beginnings

Ed Sheeran was born in Halifax and grew up in Suffolk. He began writing songs when young and built experience through live performance and independently released recordings. The No. 5 Collaborations Project EP brought particular attention in 2011, before his debut major-label album. That early period combined solo songwriting with a willingness to work across musical circles.

The first major albums

+, commonly called Plus, appeared in 2011 and included The A Team. The record established a style associated with acoustic songwriting, detailed storytelling and rhythmic vocal delivery. ×, or Multiply, followed in 2014. Songs including Thinking Out Loud reached a broad audience, and the song received Grammy recognition including Song of the Year.

A wider pop vocabulary

÷, or Divide, arrived in 2017 with songs including Shape of You, Castle on the Hill and Perfect. The contrast between these recordings shows the breadth within a catalogue sometimes described too narrowly as acoustic pop. Sheeran also returned explicitly to collaboration with No. 6 Collaborations Project, bringing a range of guest artists into one release.

Performance and the later records

His live work has often centred on the possibilities of a single performer using looping technology to build musical layers. That format connects intimate song construction with large audiences. Later studio projects include Equals, Subtract and Autumn Variations. These albums reflect different production partnerships and subject matter rather than a simple repetition of the earliest records.

Songwriting as a professional thread

Alongside his own performances, Sheeran has written with and for other recording artists. He also established Gingerbread Man Records. These activities provide a broader view of his work than the singer-with-a-guitar image alone. The recurring professional thread is the creation of songs capable of moving between solo performance, recorded production and collaboration with other voices.
